How to Set Up Night Vision on Your ROOXIS Camera

Configure color night vision, IR mode, and spotlight settings for crystal-clear footage day and night.

How to Set Up Night Vision on Your ROOXIS Camera

Your ROOXIS camera is equipped with two distinct night vision systems: color night vision powered by 4 built-in white-light LEDs and infrared (IR) night vision using 4 IR array LEDs. Each mode has different strengths, and the camera can switch between them automatically based on lighting conditions. This guide explains how each mode works, when to use it, and how to configure the settings for the best results.

Color Night Vision vs. IR Night Vision

Color Night Vision

Color night vision activates the camera's built-in white LED spotlight to illuminate the scene. Because the area is physically lit, the camera captures full-color footage just like it would during the day.

Strengths:

  • Full-color video at night makes it easier to identify clothing, vehicles, and other details.
  • Effective range of up to 10 meters (approximately 33 feet) from the camera.
  • The visible light acts as a deterrent, signaling to anyone in the area that they are being recorded.
  • AI detection performs at its best in color mode because the additional detail improves accuracy.

Considerations:

  • The white spotlight is visible to people nearby, which may not be desirable in all situations.
  • Consumes slightly more power than IR mode.
  • May attract insects to the camera lens, especially during warm months.

IR (Infrared) Night Vision

Infrared night vision uses IR LEDs built into the camera to flood the scene with infrared light. This light is invisible to the human eye, so the camera can see in complete darkness without producing any visible light.

Strengths:

  • Completely covert. No visible light means nobody knows the camera is watching.
  • Effective range of up to 20 meters (approximately 66 feet), which is significantly farther than color night vision.
  • Fewer issues with insects being attracted to the lens.
  • Lower power consumption.

Considerations:

  • Footage is in black and white, so color details like clothing or vehicle color are not captured.
  • AI detection still works but with slightly lower confidence in some edge cases due to the lack of color data.

Note: Both night vision modes maintain the camera's full resolution. The only visual difference is color (with the spotlight) versus black and white (with IR).

Choosing the Right Mode

Here is a quick reference for choosing between the available night vision settings:

Scenario Recommended Mode Why
Front door or main entrance Color Night Vision Full-color footage captures the most detail about visitors and packages. Visible light deters unwanted activity.
Backyard or perimeter IR Night Vision Covert monitoring over a larger area without drawing attention.
Driveway Auto Mode Camera switches to color when motion is detected, then back to IR when the area is clear.
Rural property with wildlife IR Night Vision Avoids disturbing animals and provides the longest viewing range.
Retail storefront or business Color Night Vision Better evidence quality and visible deterrent effect.
Mixed residential use Auto Mode Adapts to changing conditions without manual intervention.

Configuring Night Vision Settings

Accessing Night Vision Settings

  1. Open the Smart Life app and select your camera.
  2. Go to Settings > Night Vision (or Settings > Image Settings > Night Vision on some firmware versions).
  3. You will see the available mode options.

Available Modes

Auto (Recommended for most users)

The camera monitors ambient light levels continuously. When the environment gets dark, the camera enables IR night vision for baseline coverage. If the camera detects motion in color night vision range, it temporarily activates the spotlight to capture color footage, then switches back to IR after the scene is clear.

To enable Auto mode:

  1. Select Auto from the night vision options.
  2. Tap Save.

Tip: Auto mode gives you the best of both worlds. You get covert IR coverage most of the time, with the spotlight activating only when something is happening. This is the ideal setting for most home security installations.

Color Night Vision (Always-On Spotlight)

The spotlight stays on throughout the night, providing constant full-color footage.

To enable Color Night Vision:

  1. Select Color Night Vision from the options.
  2. Adjust the Spotlight Brightness slider to your preference (Low, Medium, or High).
  3. Tap Save.

IR Night Vision (Always-On Infrared)

The camera uses only infrared LEDs with no visible light. Footage is black and white.

To enable IR Night Vision:

  1. Select IR Night Vision from the options.
  2. Tap Save.

Off

Night vision is completely disabled. The camera relies only on ambient light. This is generally not recommended unless the area has sufficient external lighting such as street lights or porch lights.

Warning: Disabling night vision means the camera may produce very dark or unusable footage in low-light conditions. Only use this setting if you have confirmed that external lighting provides adequate visibility at all hours.

Spotlight Settings

The built-in spotlight has its own set of configurable options that work in conjunction with the night vision mode you select.

Spotlight Trigger Modes

Setting Behavior
Motion-Activated Spotlight turns on when the camera detects motion, then turns off after a configurable delay (10, 30, or 60 seconds). Works best with Auto night vision mode.
Always On Spotlight stays on continuously from sunset to sunrise (or during scheduled hours). Provides constant color footage but uses the most power.
Always Off Spotlight never activates, even in Auto mode. The camera relies solely on IR night vision after dark.
Schedule Spotlight activates only during specific time windows that you define.

How to Configure Spotlight Triggers

  1. Go to Settings > Night Vision > Spotlight Settings.
  2. Select your preferred trigger mode.
  3. If using Motion-Activated, set the duration the spotlight stays on after motion stops (10, 30, or 60 seconds).
  4. If using Schedule, set the start time and end time.
  5. Adjust the brightness level (Low, Medium, or High).
  6. Tap Save.

Tip: For most homes, Motion-Activated with a 30-second duration provides the best balance. The spotlight startles intruders and captures color footage during events, while keeping the area dark and quiet the rest of the time.

Auto-Switch Configuration

When using Auto mode, the camera makes intelligent decisions about when to switch between color and IR night vision. You can fine-tune this behavior.

Light Sensitivity Threshold

The camera uses a built-in ambient light sensor to determine when to activate night vision. You can adjust the threshold:

  1. Go to Settings > Night Vision > Auto-Switch Settings.
  2. Adjust the Light Sensitivity slider:
    • Earlier: Night vision activates sooner (at higher ambient light levels, such as dusk).
    • Later: Night vision waits until it is darker before activating.
  3. Tap Save.

Motion-Triggered Spotlight in Auto Mode

When Auto mode is active and the camera is using IR night vision, it can temporarily switch to color mode when motion is detected:

  1. Go to Settings > Night Vision > Auto-Switch Settings.
  2. Enable Spotlight on Motion.
  3. Set how long the spotlight stays on after motion stops.
  4. Tap Save.

This feature lets the camera capture color footage of important events while using power-efficient IR mode the rest of the time.

Optimizing Night Image Quality

Regardless of which night vision mode you use, these steps will help you get the sharpest, clearest footage.

Keep the Lens Clean

Dust, fingerprints, cobwebs, and water spots on the lens degrade image quality significantly, especially at night when light is limited.

  • Wipe the lens with a soft microfiber cloth every 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Check for spider webs around the camera housing. Spiders are attracted to the warmth of the IR LEDs, and webs can trigger false motion alerts and blur the image.
  • After rain, check for water spots on the lens.

Avoid Reflective Surfaces

The spotlight and IR LEDs can bounce off nearby surfaces, causing glare, overexposure, or washed-out footage.

  • Make sure the camera is not pointed directly at a white wall, glass window, or shiny surface within a few feet.
  • If the camera is mounted under an eave, check that the eave's underside is not reflecting light back into the lens.
  • Adjust the camera angle slightly downward to avoid catching the edge of a nearby reflective surface.

Warning: Pointing the camera at a window or glass door from close range will cause a bright glare in the image from the IR LEDs or spotlight reflecting off the glass. If you need to monitor through glass, disable IR night vision and rely on external lighting or color night vision only.

Position the Camera Correctly

  • Mount the camera at 8 to 10 feet height, angled slightly downward. This position maximizes coverage and prevents the spotlight from shining directly into people's eyes.
  • Avoid mounting the camera where it faces directly into oncoming headlights from a road or driveway. Headlights can temporarily overexpose the image and trigger unnecessary mode switches.

Check the IR LED Condition

If your IR night vision footage appears dim, hazy, or has a pink tint:

  1. Inspect the IR LEDs around the camera lens. They should glow faintly red when active (barely visible to the naked eye).
  2. If one or more LEDs appear to be off, try a firmware update or contact ROOXIS support.
  3. Clean the area around the LEDs, as dust buildup can reduce their output.

Range Comparison

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two night vision systems:

Feature Color Night Vision IR Night Vision
Effective Range Up to 10 meters (33 feet) Up to 20 meters (66 feet)
Image Color Full color Black and white
Visible Light Yes (white spotlight) No (invisible infrared)
Covert Operation No Yes
AI Detection Accuracy Optimal Very good
Power Consumption Higher Lower
Insect Attraction Moderate to high Low
Detail for Identification Excellent (clothing color, vehicle color) Good (shapes and movement)
Best Use Case Entry points and high-priority areas Perimeter and large-area coverage

Tip: If you have multiple ROOXIS cameras, consider using color night vision for cameras at entry points (front door, garage) and IR night vision for perimeter cameras (backyard, side yard). This gives you the best identification footage where it matters most and broad, covert coverage everywhere else.

Troubleshooting Night Vision

Night vision does not activate when it gets dark

  • Confirm that night vision is not set to Off in the settings.
  • If using Auto mode, check the light sensitivity threshold. It may be set too late, so the camera waits until it is very dark before switching.
  • Make sure a bright porch light or street light is not shining directly on the camera's light sensor, tricking it into thinking it is still daytime.

Footage has a bright white glare at night

  • The camera is likely pointing at a nearby reflective surface. Adjust the angle to avoid walls, windows, or shiny objects within a few feet of the lens.
  • Reduce the spotlight brightness if using Color Night Vision.

IR night vision range seems shorter than expected

  • Clean the lens and the area around the IR LEDs.
  • Check for obstructions (branches, decorations) that might be blocking the IR beam.
  • Dense fog, heavy rain, and snow can reduce effective IR range. This is normal and not a camera defect.

Spotlight keeps turning on and off rapidly

  • This usually means the spotlight is attracting insects that trigger motion detection, which activates the spotlight, which attracts more insects.
  • Switch to IR Night Vision mode or increase the notification cooldown period.
  • Apply insect repellent spray around (but not on) the camera housing.
  • Consider enabling AI Human Detection to prevent insect-triggered spotlight activations.
